The Outfall of War

  • PC

I buried my heart today.
They folded up the flag and stowed it away,
Into my bare arms searching for peace;
I stared ahead, simply couldn’t release,
That thought of never holding again,
On to that man that now only causes pain.
He fought hard and was bold,
And in war his life would hold;
Today I buried my soul,
One I feel in love with in times of ole.
Promises of growing old together,
Now swept away like a feather,
Dancing in the cold dark wind,
As tears flow down my skin.
I buried my husband today beneath sand and rock,
And that 21 gun salute wasn’t so much somber as shock.
